If you love bacon, be sure to plan a stop at L. Halteman Family Country Foods. The Riehl family, three generations of butchers from Lancaster County, offer no fewer than eight varieties: applewood, pepper, maple glazed, and even those made from beef and turkey. Their most popular is the hickory variety that they smoke themselves, and the smoky flavor doesn’t end there. Pick up ham hocks or turkey wings to flavor a pot of greens, or succulent smoked pork chops to eat with sautéed apples. Besides bacon, the shop offers fresh cuts of prime beef, poultry, and pork—much of it raised in Lancaster county, as well as a selection of Lancaster county preserves, dry goods, and even vegetables in the height of summer. Brothers Jake and Samuel Riehl run the show, but nearly every smiling face behind the counter is a member of their extended Mennonite family.
