On Saturday, May 19, Reading Terminal Market will celebrate “Diamond Day” as part of the Market’s year-long 125th birthday festivities. To thank loyal customers and market-goers for 125 years of success, the Market will offer giveaways, food samples, tours, and special 125th birthday-themed discounts.

Schedule:

10 a.m. Diamond Speaker Series with Dr. Elijah Anderson, sociologist and author of The Cosmopolitan Canopy

11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Free Taste of Philly Food Tours, Diamond Deals, surprise gifts, 125th-themed items, prize wheel, music, hourly giveaways of a $100 RTM shopping spree

FREE parking will be available (with voucher) at the Hilton Garage on 11th St.

“Whereas 1893 Day was as a celebration and commemoration of the last 125 years, Diamond Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate the current success of the Market and our treasured customers who have made that success possible,” said Anuj Gupta, General Manager of Reading Terminal Market. “We encourage our customers, community members, and anyone who loves Reading Terminal to join us for a unique and memorable celebration at the Market.”

Diamond Day festivities will kick-off at 10 a.m. in the Rick Nichols room with an installment of the Market’s ongoing Diamond Speaker Series. Dr. Elijah Anderson, sociologist and author of The Cosmopolitan Canopy, will discuss his book and the observations he makes about the Reading Terminal Market and its embodiment of cross-cultural interaction, which helps to reinforce and spread tolerance. Anderson’s writings inspired the “Breaking Bread, Breaking Barriers: Food as a Bridge to Cultural Understanding” dinner series that was presented by the Market in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in 2017.

The celebration will continue throughout the Market until 3 p.m., where attendees can expect a festive atmosphere complete with diamond-themed décor. There will be free tours by Taste of Philly Food Tours and merchants will also be offering “Diamond Deals”, surprise gifts, and 125th-themed items for customers throughout the event. Similar to the price throwbacks on 1893 Day, merchants will ring a bell to notify lucky shoppers and diners who receive a Diamond Deal. Unlike the price throwbacks, the Diamond Deals will offer free items and free purchases. Customers will also have the opportunity to spin a prize wheel for the chance to win items ranging from a $5 gift card to tickets for museums and other attractions around the city, and once an hour a winner will be chosen for a $100 shopping spree at Reading Terminal Market.

The Market will offer all customers on Diamond Day a free two-hour parking voucher at the Hilton Garage on 11th Street, and other special treats for loyal patrons. Diamond Day will also serve as an invitation for longtime customers to share their stories and contribute to a time capsule that will be preserved for opening in 25 years for the 150th Birthday celebration.

Diamond Day is part of the Market’s year-long 125th birthday celebration. 1893 Day celebrated the Market’s past, Diamond Day will celebrate its present, and “Reading Terminal Tomorrow” scheduled for the fall will celebrate its future.
