Reading Terminal Market

Reading Terminal Merchants

At their stand, which truly changes from winter to summer, Amos Kauffman and his father, Benuel, are known for stocking only the most seasonal produce, some of which they grow themselves, and the rest which they source from other Amish farms in Lancaster County. A little slice of Pennsylvania Dutch country in the heart of Reading Terminal, summer means heaps of sweet corn, peppers, and rows of red tomatoes; autumn brings Brussels sprouts and cabbages; and spring means asparagus and berries. Year-round, since they opened in the early 1980s, they offer as complete an array of dry goods and handicrafts as possible. A rainbow of glass jars contain all manner of fruit butters, pickles, preserves, and jams from McCutcheons and Jake & Amos, including the more obscure ones like garlic jam, pickled beet eggs, sauerkraut, and chow chow relish. Even before you’ve bought your veggies, it’s easy to be tempted by tricolor popping corn, crunchy pretzels, dried sweet corn, dry mixes for soup, shoofly pie, and pancakes, and their dazzling array of freshly ground nut butters.
