Less Pennsylvania, more Deutsch, Wursthaus Schmitz brings the modern yet traditional German flavors to Reading Terminal Market. Owners Doug and Kelly Hager and Chef Jeremy Nolen’s take on German food first became popular at their South Street restaurant, Brauhaus Schmitz, and their Reading Terminal lunch counter and deli offers those same flavors in a more casual setting. There’s a deli case full of assorted sausages like weisswurst, bratwurst, and kielbasa, side dishes like potato salad, red cabbage, and sauerkraut, and hard-to-find cooked and cured meats like leberkäse, gelbwurst, German-style bologna, and the smoky, snappy sausages called landjäger. Wursthaus also offers a full menu of sandwiches and platters featuring hot, crispy pork or chicken schnitzel, their sausages and meats, and even currywurst, a popular Berlin street snack of pork sausage with curry ketchup. While you wait for your meal, you can peruse their shelves of colorfully packaged, imported ingredients like smoked fish, mustards, vinegars, Haribo gummy candies, and chocolates, to find a little taste of Germany to take home.
